Supabase vs Firebase for AI-Built Apps

If you are building an app with AI, sooner or later you need a backend: a database, user accounts, file storage and maybe realtime updates. The two most popular all-in-one answers are Supabase and Firebase. Both rank in our Databases & backends category. Here is how they differ and which suits which kind of project.
The core difference: SQL vs NoSQL
Supabase is built on Postgres, a relational SQL database. Data lives in tables with defined columns and relationships. You can query it with SQL, join tables and enforce constraints.
Firebase is Google's backend platform, and its main databases (Cloud Firestore and the Realtime Database) are NoSQL document stores. Data lives in collections of JSON-like documents. There is no join; you structure data around how you will read it.
For AI-assisted building this matters a lot. Language models have seen enormous amounts of SQL, and a relational schema is easy for both you and the AI to reason about. That is a big reason Supabase has become the default backend for vibe-coded apps, and why builders like Lovable integrate it directly.
Auth
Both include authentication with email/password, magic links and social logins. Firebase Auth is very mature and especially smooth on mobile. Supabase Auth integrates tightly with Postgres row-level security (RLS), so access rules live right next to your data.
Whichever you use, set access rules. In Supabase that means enabling RLS and writing policies; in Firebase, writing Security Rules. A common vibe-coding mistake is shipping with these open.
Realtime, storage and functions
Both provide file storage and serverless functions. Firebase's realtime sync is a long-standing strength, particularly for mobile and offline-first apps. Supabase offers realtime subscriptions to database changes too. If realtime is the core of your app, also look at Convex, a reactive TypeScript backend that AI agents write well.
Pricing model
Without quoting numbers: Firebase has a free Spark plan and a pay-as-you-go Blaze plan billed on usage such as reads, writes and storage. Supabase has a free tier and paid plans, with usage-based components. NoSQL read-based billing can surprise you if your app reads many documents per page; relational queries usually make costs easier to predict. Check both official pricing pages.
Lock-in
Supabase is open source and built on standard Postgres, so you can export your data or self-host. Firebase is proprietary to Google Cloud; migrating away from Firestore usually means reshaping your data. If portability matters, Supabase or plain Postgres from Neon is the safer bet.
Which should you pick?
- Web app built with an AI builder or agent: Supabase.
- Mobile-first app, especially with offline sync: Firebase.
- You only need a database, not auth or storage: Neon.
- Realtime collaborative app in TypeScript: consider Convex.
Next steps: if you are building from scratch, follow how to vibe code an app, then deploy with one of the options in free hosting for side projects.
How AI tools handle each
In practice, AI coding agents and app builders tend to produce cleaner results with Supabase for web apps: they can write SQL migrations, define tables with relationships, and generate typed clients. With Firestore, agents need clear guidance on how documents are structured and denormalised, because the "right" shape depends on your read patterns. If you choose Firebase, write a short data-model document and give it to your agent at the start of each task.
Migration and backups
Whichever you pick, set up backups early and test restoring at least once. Know how to export your data. For Supabase that means standard Postgres dumps; for Firebase, the managed export tooling for Firestore. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup.
A quick checklist before you commit
- Sketch your main entities and how they relate. Lots of relations favour SQL.
- List your must-have features (offline sync, realtime, file uploads, auth providers) and confirm each is supported.
- Check which option your builder or framework integrates with natively.
- Estimate usage for your first year using official pricing.
Local development
Both platforms offer local emulation so you can develop without touching production: the Supabase CLI can run a local stack, and Firebase has its Local Emulator Suite. Using them makes it safer to let AI agents experiment, since mistakes hit a local copy, and makes automated tests possible.
FAQ
Is Supabase better than Firebase?
For most AI-built web apps, Supabase is the easier choice because of Postgres and SQL. Firebase is excellent for mobile and offline-first apps.
Is Supabase free?
Supabase has a free tier suitable for prototypes and small projects. Check the official pricing page for current limits.
Can I migrate from Firebase to Supabase?
Yes, but it requires reshaping document data into tables. Supabase publishes migration guides; plan the schema carefully first.
